It’s Alive! by Yehuda Berlinger

And so to ‘It’s Alive’. Apparently this game was designed by Yehuda Berlinger and only developed by Reiver Games. The original was apparently based upon the menorah (the Jewish seven-candle religious symbol) but has somehow been transformed into the slab of a mad 19th century scientist. The aim is to collect the eight body parts that you need for your Frankenstein’s monster (hand, arm, leg, foot, torso, head, brain and heart). You turn over the top body part, buy it for face value, sell it to your graveyard for half its value or auction it off to the other players (this can be very lucrative, but can also go horribly wrong – you don’t need two feet – not in this game). Throw in revolting peasants, coffins that are wild cards and that’s pretty much it. But again – a very neat, simple system that gives a game that comes in under the hour mark. For the record, Phil completed his monster first but Jack seemed to have acquired a huge pile of money during the course of the game, which gave him victory by one point.

And so by ten o’clock all is done and dusted, and Jack heads back up to the bright lights of York, Slade to the outer limits of Bradford. A very good evening indeed – one that will be reciprocated when Phil heads north to York at some time in the future.

Note: Phil’s offspring are persuaded to try It’s Alive the day after, and very well it goes down too. Emily (8) rates it as “really good” – rare praise indeed.
